QUALITY FUNCTION DEPLOYMENT IS A PROCESS
QFD uses a methodical, thorough approach to developing a new product or service.

It serves as a blueprint for implementing the integrated product development (IPD) approach of concurrent engineering (CE).

It is a concurrent rather than a sequential approach to product development, using cross-functional teams, improving communications between functions, identifying potential problems sooner, facilitating the use of DFM/A and Design to Cost, and documenting the team's activities and findings in the House of Quality (HOQ) matrices. (Note: the above graphic is a blank HOQ).

As a well-tested, proven product development planning process, it identifies the specific customer-focused purposes for and best time for incorporating numerous supporting methods and tools such as the HOQ matrices, DOE, Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Decision Trees, etc.
